2nd Edition ISIM: Interaction and Storytelling with(in) Immersive Media (ISIM)

New Avenues for Increased Engagement

Call for Papers

The future of media experiences poses a series of thrilling challenges, but the appearance of novel technologies, formats and mediums brings a new wave of opportunities to reimagine content (co-)creation, hybridization, distribution, interaction and engagement possibilities.

While opportunities are endless, the 2nd edition of “Interaction and Storytelling with(in) Immersive Media (ISIM)” Workshop aims to explore and discuss the potential and implications of integrating emerging immersive media technologies and formats (e.g., Point Clouds, light field, 3D Gaussian Splatting, spatial audio, multi-sensory stimuli…), potentially assisted with Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, to enable new avenues for evocative consumption experiences and increased engagement. In particular, the primary focus will be on exploring and ideating new multimodal interaction and storytelling possibilities with and within immersive media environments, so as to maximize the potential benefits and revenues.

Under the umbrella of cross-fertilization actions between key EU projects in this area, ISIM aims at bringing together worldwide enthusiastic academia and industry players, as well as end users and stakeholders, to discuss ideas, challenges, and opportunities in this domain, with a key focus on the added value to the consumers, and thus indirectly to industry players in this domain (content creators, content service providers, manufacturers, technologists…) and thus to the worldwide society.

ISIM 2025 builds upon a very successful edition in 2024, which gathered around 40 participants, 7 papers’ presentations and 6 projects’ presentations (2 of them shared with Video4IMX workshop): https://transmixr.eu/isim-workshop/

Program

9:00 – 9:15. Welcome and Overall Presentations

9:15 – 10:15. Keynote Talk, by Jesús Gutiérrez (UPM)

Title: “Evaluating (quality of) user experiences with immersive technologies

Abstract: The emergence of immersive media technologies is providing to the users new interactive experiences, which allow a more natural and complete exploration of the represented content in comparison with previous audiovisual technologies. These innovative solutions entail novel perceptual and technical factors that should be extensively studied to support an adequate and inclusive development of technology so it meets the expectations and demands of all users. In this sense, this talk provides an overview on the evaluation of the quality of user experiences with immersive technologies, primarily by subjective tests. Specifically, a set of examples will be presented, covering the evaluation of different use cases of immersive technologies with different levels of interaction (e.g., 360-degree video, virtual reality, immersive communications, etc.).

Bio: Jesús Gutiérrez is an Associate Professor at the Grupo de Tratamiento de Imágenes (GTI, Image Processing Group) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Spain. He received the Telecommunication Engineering degree from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (Spain) in 2008, the master’s degree in Communications Technologies and Systems in 2011, and the Ph.D. degree in Telecommunication in 2016, both from the UPM. From 2016 to 2019 he was a Marie Curie post-doctoral researcher at the Image, Perception and Interaction (IPI) group of the Université de Nantes (France). From 2020 to 2022 he was a Juan de la Cierva post-doctoral researcher at GTI of the UPM and then he served as Assistant Professor until 2024. His research interests are in the area of image and video processing, evaluation of user quality of experience, immersive media technologies, and visual attention and human perception. Currently, he is the chair of Immersive Media Group (IMG) of the Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG).
